Improve Your Writing with Techniques Used by Novelists, Journalists, Oral Storytellers and Essayists

Each workshop will feature a speaker’s presentation, audience discussion and writing exercises. All writers are welcome, from those who are just beginning to write to those with years of experience. Guest Speakers Tim Wendel is the author of eight books, his most recent being High Heat: The Secret History of the Fastball and the Improbable Search for the Fastest Pitcher of All Time. Ken Burns called this 2010 release, “A blazing fastball of a story—compelling, relentless, riveting.” Tim Wendel is also a journalist for many publications such as the New York Times, Esquire, and National Geographic Traveler, a columnist for USA Today, and a teacher of fiction and non-fiction writing at Johns Hopkins University. www.timwendel.com
Cheryl Somers Aubin is a memoir writing teacher and an essayist whose writing has appeared in newspapers and periodicals such as The Washington Post, The Boston Globe and Foundation Magazine. She has a Master of Arts degree in writing from Johns Hopkins University. www.cherylaubin.com Nadine James, a local educator and oral storyteller, has been using the art of storytelling to enhance the learning of young students and adults for more than twenty years. Vivid storytelling images link the speaker, the listener, and the writer.
Deborah Ross, a psychotherapist in private practice, previously developed science and other exhibits for the Smithsonian. Her training in the expressive arts, as well as guided imagery and journaling, can assist people as they examine, understand, and illuminate their own stories.

In this interactive workshop, we will start with writing prompts and then later move on to creating collages based on our work. No artistic ability is required! Just bring your memories and be ready for a great writing and arts experience! There will be plenty of writing exercises and also a chance to share your writing with others if you’d like. Please bring color or black and white photocopies of any photographs you’d like to work with in the collage exercises. Coffee and tea will be available.
